Contemporary

Infused deeply in my recollection are aspects of a story – the name and the author I have no memory – the main character of which I thought closely resembled mine…

In the narrative the character Ram, is in deep thinking while attempting a routine task of crossing the road at a certain Junction somewhere in the state of New Delhi where at that point the road- a sort of two way and a bit complicated at that- at the cojoining of many roads didn’t have a proper divider or what appears to serve that purpose seriously disjoined making crossing the road a nightmare. Ram just an ordinary soul far from anyone with a clout in the government has had as many as four solutions, perhaps more, on how the municipality can redraw the junction , rearrange a bit of stones around in a way of creating an island where a pedestrian stranded could find a safe asylum in which if caught in the traffic where if we also have some greenery as well, such a landscape  would be a safe heaven ,an Oasis with a few flowering plants further enhancing it to give a feel of a stroll in front of Vidhana Soudha in Bangalore and in that manner he has had many good ideas…

He even had a temptation to halt there and take a few measurements by foot and draw this up and sent it over to the local city councillor but today he has a constraint. The reason why he is in the first place crossing the road is to get across to the pharmacy as in a way of darting in and out, grab some gastric relief for his father who has suddenly developed an acid reflex. His scooter is not reliable as he couldn’t fix a sort of engine trouble which could simply be a spark plug issue, but he was highly paranoic about the current mechanic whom he suspects as being about to swindle him this time around. The water pipes in the washroom are also beginning to leak which his wife has been making a ruckus about but then these are all matters that can be sorted out had he had a little bit of money to spend. But his finances took a tail spin of late in that the bit of money he invested in his wife brothers finance company has almost crashed with an employee stealing some, (and his wife now washing off her hands ) his sister back home had a uterus removal for which he had to siphon some of his stashed away funds without an express consent of his wife (which wouldn’t couldn’t have been obtained amicably under any reasonable means) and that his employer had just about pushed him out of his typist job for someone who claims to have expertise on computer. Now refreshing your skill sets and upgrading to learn the computer is a task that is easier said than done but for a typist with the way the world is moving and the position that he has with no other trasferable skills, the best option is not to bother about any of this for the moment.

He will when it comes to a head. But for now, the question he is raising as to what the municipality is doing about this intersection where quite a few pedestrians got stuck and even a cyclist perished in an attempt avoiding colliding with a pedestrian and banging his head against the loose pebbles. What are the politicians doing about the freshly allotted funds for the renovation of the old Jain quarters? What about the council meetings about the green vision projects? By the way he is supposed to take his father for his check up on the sugar issue. Meanwhile the Delhi metropolitan police has issues with the Mandal commission report demonstrators obstructing the morning traffic for which Ram knows that it is a matter of the City mayor calling for a meeting. He plans to talk to the news reporter the only influential person he knows and who is related to his uncle. His daughter’s school fee will be due next week. Next week is also the deadline for the Mandir report implementation which it looks like has some implications on which he is no more than a bystander watching the streets that is about to burn. His son had just sprained his ankle that needs a casting. In the western ghats there is environmental disaster waiting to happen with the rock miners. His neighbor’s dog is being of leash a lot these days. Why this Kerala temple not allowing women inside. The back door to the kitchen is beginning to give away with rust on the joints. And why this Cauvery River issue be resolve amicably between the Tamils and Kannada’s after all they all look the same…

Why the current bill is so high this month. Why was Mohinder Amarnath dropped? One string has come of his sandals. LTTE. Too may autos refusing to accept a ride. Onion price. Bofors scandal. Kitchen sink. Khalistan. Tiffin box. TN Shesan…

So that is what is contemporary all about: while as I am desperately trying to avoid my tail catching fire I also would want to rescue the world from the impending peril, climate change, famine, world war and the survival of the gunnest ( that is he who owns a gun)
